2015 B.U.L.S.H.I.T. AWARDS CATEGORIES ANNOUNCEMENT
Hiya Baltimore Small Theater! It’s gettttttin’ to be that time again! 2015 is winding down and that means it’s almost the day to honor all we saw good this year in the very best way we know how – with SHIT. That is, with the Baltimore United Local Stage and Hidden Independent Theater or B.U.L.S.H.I.T. Awards. The 2015 B.U.L.S.H.I.T. Awards will be held on Monday, January 25th, 2016 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Mt. Vernon with the generous technical assistance of our friends at Spotlighters Theatre. Achilles, Styx and I are getting really, really, really excited to love on all y’all. The 2015 award categories are below, the nominees will be announced December 1st and tickets will go on sale on December 15th.
A word on this year’s categories:
We’re excited to say that we’ve expanded the awards in almost every category, adding awards for bravest choice as well best concept, set design and stage management (and a special award for those social justice warriors who are killing it out there). We also changed the way that we do our actor categories. From now on, we eliminate the distinction between “actor” and “actress”. Instead, we will now use “actor” for it’s common usage, neutral connotation. The actor awards are now split by genre, instead of by gender.

How are nominees chosen? Decided on?
Good question, Renata! Achilles, Styx and myself form a panel and we choose the nominees based on our reviews from the year.
Awesome, thanks!
Now I’m confused, many of your reviews don’t include mention of a Stage Manager, or Technical Team. How do you decide on those categories?
Apologize for all the questions. New to the Balt Theatre scene just wanna know everything!!!
That’s somewhat true, Renata. We consider our reviews to be primary documents when deciding on the awards and many of the reviews do, in fact, mention members of the technical team (direction, lighting, set). We generally base the awards on shows that had technical elements impressive enough to merit a mention in the review, but not always. Sometimes, we also rely on the notes we take that don’t make it in to the published review for space or other reasons (we know that we hold these awards, so we watch the shows with an eye towards them). For an award like stage management, we will look for shows that were particularly “tight” or “smooth” which connotes a firm backstage hand.
Thank you so much for the clarification!
Look forward to seeing who the nominees are this year!
